The Impact of Video-Based Microlearning: Insights from Research

Microlearning has gained immense popularity as a modern learning methodology, particularly in education and corporate training. This approach focuses on delivering content in small, easily digestible chunks, making learning more efficient and engaging. With advancements in technology, video-based microlearning has emerged as a powerful tool to enhance learning outcomes. It utilizes short, focused video lessons to present information in a way that is both engaging and accessible.

A recent study explored the impact of video-based microlearning on programming skills and technology acceptance among intermediate school students. The findings underscore the potential of this innovative learning strategy in enhancing skill acquisition and learner engagement. In this blog, we will delve into the study’s details, its significant findings, and how AI video quiz makers like Kiwzie support microlearning.

Study Overview

The study aimed to assess the effect of video-based microlearning on students’ programming skills and their acceptance of technology as a learning tool. Conducted in the first semester of 2022, it involved a population of 2,914 third-grade intermediate school students from 39 public schools under the Hafr Al-Batin Education Directorate, Saudi Arabia.

A quasi-experimental design was implemented, dividing students into two groups:

  1. An experimental group of 31 students who participated in video-based microlearning, and
  2. A control group of 32 students who followed traditional learning methods.

To measure the effectiveness, the study utilized a technology acceptance scale and a performance observation card for programming skills.

The results of the study strongly favored video-based microlearning, revealing three major advantages:

  1. Enhanced Engagement and Learning Experience: Video-based microlearning provided a visually appealing and engaging way to present educational content. The combination of auditory and visual stimuli captured students' attention and minimized distractions, making the learning experience more immersive. As a result, students in the experimental group demonstrated significantly higher programming skill development, compared to the control group.
  2. Improved Knowledge Retention and Cognitive Load Management: The study aligned with the cognitive load theory, which suggests that breaking information into smaller, manageable chunks enhances knowledge retention. Video-based microlearning strategically used mini-learning units to prevent cognitive overload, enabling students to process information more effectively and recall it later with ease.
  3. Validation of the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning: The research findings support the cognitive theory of multimedia learning, which posits that content should be presented in segmented units for better comprehension. The ability to regulate the pace of learning allowed students to absorb information at their own speed, leading to improved knowledge retention and reduced overwhelm.

Why Video-Based Microlearning is Highly Effective

The study concluded that students widely accepted video-based microlearning as an effective method for acquiring programming skills. Several factors contributed to this acceptance:

  1. Concise and Focused Content: Short, targeted video modules made learning more digestible and engaging.
  2. Relevance to Learning Needs: The content was directly related to their coursework, which reinforces classroom instruction.
  3. Accessibility and Flexibility: Students could access the learning material on multiple devices – computers, tablets, and smartphones – at any time, making learning more convenient and inclusive.
